The guitar is a popular string instrument played by plucking or strumming. The guitar originated in Spain in the 16th century. The standard guitar has 6 strings. The acoustic guitar is a non-electric guitar which is light weight, traditionally made of wood with nylon string. The big hollow body amplifies the sound and this is what you hear as the body of the guitar is vibrating. Electric guitars are guitars where the sound is amplified by electronics. Vibrations from the strings are picked up by pick-ups - these are magnetic devices which site on the body of a guitar and convert the vibrations into electrical energy. The energy is then amplified through a speaker. They generally have solid bodies. Bass guitars generally have 4 strings, play very low notes and are generally used to set the rhythm of a song. Bass guitars can be acoustic or electric. Some of the better manufacturers are Fender, Gibson and Ibanez. You get what you pay for when buying guitars and amplifiers and spending more will give you much better sounding equipment.
